Leadership Team
ISS' leadership team brings deep experience in corporate governance and financial services.
Gary Retelny is President of ISS and is a Managing Director of MSCI and a member of the Executive Committee. Gary has been with MSCI since 2003, heading strategy and business development, and serves as the Company’s corporate secretary working closely with the Board of Directors and its committees on the Company’s corporate governance structures and practices.
Gary led the planning and separation of MSCI from Morgan Stanley and subsequently led the initiative to take MSCI public in 2007. Last year, Gary led the deal team in its acquisition of RiskMetrics Group, including ISS.
Gary holds a Bachelor of Science and a Master of Science in civil engineering from Stanford University and an M.B.A. from the Stanford University Graduate School of Business. With close to 30 years of experience in private equity, mergers and acquisitions, and investment management, and having served as a Director himself on a number of boards for domestic and international companies, Gary brings a wealth of knowledge to the leadership of ISS.
Stephen Harvey is Head of MSCI’s ISS business. He is responsible for leading the firm’s proxy research, voting, class action filing and proxy distribution services. Stephen joined RiskMetrics (subsequently acquired by MSCI) in May of 2000 to build the company’s worldwide Sales and Marketing division. For the twelve years prior he worked at Dow Jones & Co., most recently as Managing Director of International sales and marketing. Stephen has led organizations in Europe, Asia and the United States.
Mark Brockway leads the ISS Corporate Services, Inc. (“ICS”) subsidiary of ISS that provides corporate governance and executive compensation benchmarking and analytical tools and advisory services to corporate issuers and professional services firms. Mark has been with ICS since 1999. Prior to this role, Mark was an analyst and then a senior analyst with ISS’ Proxy Advisory Service, responsible for producing analyses and vote recommendations regarding proxy contests, mergers, acquisitions, corporate restructurings, and equity plan proposals. He earned a B.A. in finance from James Madison University in 1994, and an M.B.A. from the University of Maryland in 2000. Before joining ISS, Mark was a research analyst at Costar Group, Inc.
Martha Carter, Ph.D. is the global head of research for ISS. In this role, she directs proxy voting research worldwide, as well as ISS' thought leadership on corporate governance issues. Prior to joining ISS in 2002, Martha served as Director, Listing Qualifications, for The NASDAQ Stock Market. Martha holds a Ph.D. in Finance from George Washington University and an MBA in Finance from The Wharton School, University of Pennsylvania. She did her undergraduate work in Mathematics and French at Purdue University.
Jamie Gracey leads the global operations group, responsible for the operations of ISS' proxy voting, distribution and securities class action services. Prior to this role, Jamie was the Head of the ISS Control and Audit team in Rockville, MD. Before coming to ISS in 2004, Jamie served for seven years at T. Rowe Price in various operations management roles within the Retirement Services and Investment Support divisions. Jamie has a degree in Economics from Hobart College and an MBA in Corporate Finance from the University of Baltimore.
Cheryl Gustitus heads Marketing and Communications for ISS. Cheryl returned to ISS after serving as Senior Vice President of Marketing and Communications at WealthEngine, a wealth identification and research company. Previously, Cheryl spent seven years heading marketing, communications and investor relations for ISS/RiskMetrics Group where she worked to establish the company’s market leadership in corporate governance and risk analysis. Cheryl helped lead the RiskMetrics through its 2008 initial public offering and through a number of subsequent acquisitions. Prior to joining ISS, she served as Vice President of Corporate Communications at Ocwen Financial in West Palm Beach, Florida. There, she worked on the launch of a financial technology spin-off of the mortgage-servicing parent. Cheryl started her career at premier mutual fund companies T. Rowe Price and Calvert Group, then headed marketing for Primark Corporation, where she was responsible for integrating the brands of multiple global financial data subsidiaries.
Marija Kramer is the head of global product management for ISS. Marija joined ISS in 2003 as director of product management and led the development of a number of ISS’ core product platforms in the US and UK. In 2008, Marija moved to head global account management and re-established ISS as a highly responsive client focused provider of quality corporate governance and proxy voting solutions. Prior to joining ISS, Marija was with Thomson, where she was responsible for the design and implementation of Thomson's flagship investment management and banking portals. Prior to earning her MBA in Finance and Marketing from American University, Marija worked for the Croatian Foreign Ministry where she focused on US-Croatian bilateral relations.
Lorraine Kelly heads global sales for ISS. She joined the ISS sales team in 2003 and has held a number of positions, including heading the US team and managing a key client program. Prior to joining ISS, she spent two years as a Senior Vice President of Global Sales for Thomson Financial, as well as three years in Sales Management at Primark Corporation. She started her career at Washington Service Bureau, a CCH subsidiary, as a research associate. She received a Bachelor of Arts in History from Mary Washington University.
Yovanka Bylander heads the Securities Class Action Services business. ISS’ Securities Class Action Services business serves more than 300 institutional investment clients, leveraging its large collection of securities litigation case data and its robust claims filing operation to maximize investors’ class action recoveries. Before joining ISS, she was Acting CEO of Hawkstone Capital LLC, a $200 million Europe long/short fund in which she was actively involved since it launched in 2006. Prior to Hawkstone, she was an equity analyst, covering Latin American bank stocks at Morgan Stanley and Fox-Pitt Kelton. At Morgan Stanley, she was an integral part of a leading Institutional Investor ranking research team and was an important contributor to a $2 billion Brazilian bank equity placement- one of the largest such transactions at the time.
Erik J. Tabuena leads ISS’ global data operations and its Manila office. Before joining ISS, he was the Global Chief Information Officer of Integreon Managed Solutions. Prior to this responsibility, he was the President and Managing Director of IBM Solutions Delivery Inc., the delivery arm of IBM Global Services in the Philippines. He received a Bachelor of Science in Computer Science from the University of the Philippines.
