ISS' leadership team brings deep experience in corporate governance and financial services.
Gary Retelny is President of Institutional Shareholder Services (ISS) and is a Named Executive Officer (“NEO”) and Managing Director of MSCI and a member of its Executive Committee. As President of ISS, the leading global provider of corporate governance solutions to institutional investors, corporations and other constituencies, Mr. Retelny is responsible for the overall management and leadership of the business, which includes over 600 employees across 15 global offices. He works across all key ISS functions globally to expand the company’s current range of governance solutions, ensure the quality of its research and the reliability of its proxy voting operations.
Mr. Retelny has been with MSCI Inc. since 2003. He has close to 30 years of experience in private equity, mergers and acquisitions, and investment management. Gary is the Corporate Secretary and Secretary of the MSCI Board of Directors working closely with MSCI’s Directors and Board Committees. He is also responsible for the MSCI ESG business with over 160 people.
As MSCI’s former Head of Strategy and Business Development, Gary was also responsible for major strategic initiatives including the $1.6 billion acquisition and financing of RiskMetrics Group (NYSE: RISK) in June 2010, a leader in risk management and corporate governance. He also led the acquisition of Barra (NYSE: BARZ) in June 2004 for over $800 million. He worked on the separation of MSCI from Morgan Stanley, including the implementation of MSCI’s independent governance processes and global benefit programs and led the team that took the Company public on the NYSE in a $290 million IPO in November 2007.
Gary has also overseen the Corporate Services, Legal and Internal Audit functions of the company. He also has served as Global Head of Human Resources.
Gary received a B.S. and M.S. in Civil Engineering in 1980 from Stanford University as well as an MBA from Stanford in 1983.
Stephen Harvey is the Chief Revenue Officer. He is responsible for leading the firm’s client coverage organizations, operations, product management, marketing and supporting business groups. Steve joined RiskMetrics Group where he spent 7 years leading and building the sales, marketing, and account management organizations. When ISS was acquired by RiskMetrics in 2007, Steve joined ISS to lead the business. Steve was a member of the management team that took RiskMetrics Group public in 2008 and subsequently became an officer of the public company. For the twelve years prior to RiskMetrics Group, he worked at Dow Jones & Co., most recently as Managing Director of International sales and marketing. He has led organizations in Europe, Asia and the United States.
Nancy Adler is the Head of Marketing. Prior to joining ISS, Ms. Adler was Head of Sales and Marketing for Crain's New York Business, a leading New York business publication. Earlier in her career, Ms. Adler worked for 9 years at Dow Jones & Company Inc., in a number of senior roles, which included responsibility for sales, strategy and marketing for Dow Jones International’s Global Sales division. She led the sales organization for the Global Wall Street Journal (U.S., Europe, Asia, Latin America), WSJ.com, Far Eastern Economic Review, Caijing, Vedomosti, Style Journal Europe and Fashion Journal Asia.
J. Scott Berniker is the Head of Securities Class Actions Services, which is responsible for maximizing securities class action recoveries for institutional clients. He also leads ISS’ global Lean Six Sigma initiative that engages the organization to strive for operational excellence by focusing on levers that can improve flexibility, turnaround time, quality and reliability to help ISS better meet client needs. Scott has been with ISS since 2011, and originally joined the parent company, MSCI, in 2005. Prior roles within MSCI businesses included leading strategic new market development, product development and Asia sales for CFRA, which was part of ISS at the time. Prior to re-joining MSCI, he was Director of Marketing and Investor Relations at a $1Bn AUM fund of hedge funds. Scott received an M.B.A. from The Wharton School and a B.S. in Applied Economics & Business Management from Cornell University.
Mark Brockway is Head of the ISS Corporate Services, Inc. (“ICS”) subsidiary of ISS that provides corporate governance and executive compensation benchmarking and analytical tools and advisory services to corporate issuers and professional services firms. Mark has been with ICS since 1999. Prior to this role, Mark was an analyst and then a senior analyst with ISS’ Proxy Advisory Service, responsible for producing analyses and vote recommendations regarding proxy contests, mergers, acquisitions, corporate restructurings, and equity plan proposals. He earned a B.A. in finance from James Madison University in 1994, and an M.B.A. from the University of Maryland in 2000. Before joining ISS, Mark was a research analyst at Costar Group, Inc.
Yovanka Bylander is the Head of ISS' Asset Owner Strategy. Yovanka joined ISS in November, 2011 and has since served in various roles including Head of ISS' QuickScore product line and Head of ISS’ Securities Class Action Services business. Before joining ISS, Ms. Bylander was Acting CEO of Hawkstone Capital LLC, a $200 million Europe long/short fund. Prior to Hawkstone, she was an equity analyst, covering Latin American and European bank stocks at Fox-Pitt, Kelton and Morgan Stanley. While at Morgan Stanley, she contributed to a $2 billion Brazilian bank equity placement - one of the largest such transactions at the time.
Martha Carter, Ph.D. is the Global Head of Research for ISS. In this role, she directs proxy voting research worldwide, as well as ISS' thought leadership on corporate governance issues. Prior to joining ISS in 2002, Martha served as Director, Listing Qualifications, for The NASDAQ Stock Market. Martha holds a Ph.D. in Finance from George Washington University and an MBA in Finance from The Wharton School, University of Pennsylvania. She did her undergraduate work in Mathematics and French at Purdue University.
Jamie Gracey is Head of the Global Operations Group, responsible for the operations of ISS' proxy voting and distribution. Prior to this role, Jamie was the Head of the ISS Control and Audit team in Rockville, MD. Before coming to ISS in 2004, Jamie served for seven years at T. Rowe Price in various operations management roles within the Retirement Services and Investment Support divisions. Jamie has a degree in Economics from Hobart College and an MBA in Corporate Finance from the University of Baltimore.
Lorraine Kelly is the Head of Global Sales for ISS. She joined the ISS sales team in 2003 and has held a number of positions, including heading the US team and managing a key client program. Prior to joining ISS, she spent two years as a Senior Vice President of Global Sales for Thomson Financial, as well as three years in Sales Management at Primark Corporation. She started her career at Washington Service Bureau, a CCH subsidiary, as a research associate. She received a Bachelor of Arts in History from Mary Washington University.
Marija Kramer is the Head of Global Product Management for ISS. She is responsible for new product development and strategic alliances in all regions of the world where ISS products are delivered to clients. Marija has been with ISS since 2003 and previously headed Global Account Management. Before joining ISS, Marija was with Thomson, where she was responsible for the design and implementation of Thomson's flagship investment management and banking portals. Prior to earning her MBA in Finance and Marketing from American University, Marija worked for the Croatian Foreign Ministry where she focused on US-Croatian bilateral relations.
Mary McDaniel is Head of Technology for ISS. In this role, she is responsible for the Application Development Group, Application Management and ISS IT Infrastructure. In this role she works closely with Governance Business and Product Management to refine and expand our current product roadmap plans and devise a comprehensive technology strategy for ISS products and platform. Mary has many years of experience in leading large scale software development projects. Her most recent role was Vice President for Software Development and Technical Operations at Online Resources Corporation. Prior to that Mary has been a Senior Vice President for Operations at FIS in San Diego where she oversaw the commercial lending product operations for the Advanced Commercial Bank Services Group. Mary earned a B.B.A. in Management Information Science from Texas Wesleyan University in Fort Worth and her Masters in Science in Information Technology Management from George Washington University. While at GWU, she also earned a CIO University Certificate that meets the competency requirements adopted by the Federal Chief Information Officers Council.
Richard Reynics is Head of Client Service and Consultants, responsible for leadership of the account management teams located around the world. Rich coordinates client service for a diverse base of ISS securities class action services, voting and research clients in more than 25 global markets. Rich has been with ISS since 2007 and has worked effectively across R&D, Research, Operations, Sales, and the Business Group, managing some of our largest contracts and working with his colleagues to improve our proactive service. He holds a BA degree in Political Science from American University in Washington, DC.
Erik J. Tabuena is Head of ISS’ Global Data Operations. Before joining ISS, he was the Global Chief Information Officer of Integreon Managed Solutions. Prior to this responsibility, he was the President and Managing Director of IBM Solutions Delivery Inc., the delivery arm of IBM Global Services in the Philippines. He received a Bachelor of Science in Computer Science from the University of the Philippines.
