Institutional Shareholder Services is pleased to invite you to the annual 2021 APAC Stewardship Briefing held virtually on 14th -15th September. This premier gathering will focus on how the events of 2021 will serve to shape investment stewardship, globally, over the months and years ahead.

Join us in these sessions covering topics ranging from ESG trends in voting to the impact on Net-Zero pledges. Panels will feature ISS experts and clients and are designed to be interactive to facilitate dialogue.

The sessions will not be recorded and are targeted towards Institutional Investors only. Please find below the agenda as well as a brief introduction to the speakers and moderators.

SESSION

ESG Trends on the Ballot: Proxy Season Update

Panelists will explore investor approaches to stewardship and discuss Australian and New Zealand proxy season developments to date. We will address the impact of ESG trends such as climate on investor voting trends as well as get an update on global voting trends.

Georgina Marshall, Head of Global Research, ISS

Georgina leads the ISS global research teams that report on approximately 45,000 meetings in approximately 115 global markets each year, providing institutional investors with informed research and voting recommendations, and producing studies and white papers on issues and topics related to corporate governance and responsible ownership. In addition, Marshall serves as Head of the ISS Global Policy Board, which develops the ISS benchmark global voting policies

Vasili Kolesnikoff, Head of Australia and New Zealand Research, ISS

Vas oversees the research, board engagement, and voting recommendations of regional research covered by the ISS Research team in Sydney, Australia. He is well known in the Australian corporate governance community for his former role as Chief Executive Officer of the Australian Shareholders’ Association, where he was responsible for leadership of advocacy, policy, and research. He has been a member of the ASX Corporate Governance Council, the Financial Reporting Council and the Australian Securities & Investments Commission Consumer Advisory Panel.

Enver Fitch, E&S Research Lead, ISS

Enver is responsible for leading research and analysis of company E&S practices and drafting E&S shareholder proposal proxy voting recommendations for institutional investor clients. Enver contributes to the development of ISS’ proxy voting policies and supports the development of ESG-related product offerings.

Governance Voting Trends in Asia 2021

ISS’ regional research head and subject matter expert will provide a deep dive into recent developments and emerging voting trends in major Asian markets such as China, Hong Kong, Singapore, Korea, etc. This session will cover topics ranging from critical 2021 AGM issues to regulatory matters and other market developments.

Warren Chen, Head of Asia Ex-Japan Research, ISS

Warren leads the Asia ex-Japan research teams in support of ISS’ mission of empowering investors to effectively manage governance opportunities and risks to realize long-term value, as well as interfacing with investors, companies and others seeking to engage with ISS in these markets. As a member of ISS’ Global Policy Board, he also focuses on ensuring that ISS’ voting policies and guidelines for Asian markets are consistent with local and regional governance best practices.

How to Practically Integrate Climate Research into Engagement & Voting

Panelists will discuss how investors can help make sure climate is on the agenda. Engagement and voting on climate-related shareholder resolutions remain the most common mechanisms for investors to address a growing number of concerns. This session will provide practical examples of such engagement and voting decisions.

Bjorn De Smedt, Associate Director Sales- Australia and New Zealand, ISS

Bjorn is Account Executive for Australia and New Zealand at ISS responsible for business development for ISS and ISS ESG’s solutions. Prior to joining ISS Australia in 2011, Bjorn held a similar position in the ISS Brussels office, advising large asset owners and investment managers in Northern Europe on active ownership and responsible investment approaches. He has over 18 years of experience in the financial services industry and has held several positions within the industry.

Kristen Le Mesurier, Head of ESG & Engagement, Platypus Asset Management

Kristen joined Platypus in October 2020 from AMP Capital where she ran the Ethical Leaders diversified funds, AMP Capital’s range of ethical and ESG superannuation funds for institutional investors. She is passionate about engagement and driving change and has led ambitious engagement agendas on modern slavery, climate change, gender diversity, sugar and obesity and animal rights. Before funds management Kristen was a sell-side analyst covering financials, a corporate governance analyst at Ownership Matters, a commercial litigator at Piper Alderman, and a business journalist with Fairfax. She holds Bachelor degrees in Commerce and Law and a Master of Laws from the University of Sydney.

Emma Pringle, Head of ESG, Maple Brown Abbott

Emma joined Maple-Brown Abbott in May 2020. Before Maple-Brown Abbott, Emma spent 14 years with BT, most recently as Head of Customer Governance and Sustainability where she had responsibility for the organisation’s product governance and sustainability functions across superannuation, investments and insurance. Prior to this, Emma held strategy and operations roles in BT’s private wealth, superannuation, investments, platforms and advice divisions. Before BT, Emma worked in blue-chip technology and financial services organisations in Sydney and London. Among industry collaborations, Emma served as co-Chair of the Australian Sustainable Finance Initiative (ASFI) technical working group on meeting community expectations and has experience across the asset owner, corporate and investor pillars of the ESG value chain.

Alison Ewings, Head of Engagement, Regnan

Alison joined Regnan in 2016 with responsibility for managing its engagement program, meeting with the boards and senior executives of ASX listed companies raising investors concerns regarding the financial impacts of environmental and social issues. She has worked in sustainability for over a decade and was formerly the Head of Sustainability at Westpac, a globally recognised sustainability leader, where she oversaw the development of environmental, social and governance frameworks and policy.

She has been a director of the UN Global Compact’s Australian Network and a member of the technical standards committee for the AA1000 Stakeholder Engagement Standard. Alison has been appointed to a technical working group of the Australian Sustainable Finance Initiative (ASFI). She has also held roles in corporate strategy in the financial sector and undertaken a number of sustainability consulting projects with leading UK organisations. More recently, Alison ran a series of masterclasses for IGCC members, including a focus on the role of active stewards on climate change. Alison holds a Bachelor of Commerce from the University of New South Wales and a Master of Organisational Communication from Charles Sturt University.

How can the SDGs Help Deliver on Net Zero Targets

There has been a rising tide of net zero pledges ahead of the upcoming 26th Conference of the Parties (COP26) in Glasgow this November. Net Zero is a goal the global community needs to reach quickly. The finance sector, often regarded as the blood supply for the economy, is uniquely positioned to lead this shift and benefit from the opportunities offered by the transition to a low-carbon economy. This session will explore how the adherence to UN Sustainable Development Goals can help investors achieve their Net Zero pledges.

Viola Lutz, Head of Climate Solutions, ISS ESG

Viola leads the Climate Solutions unit of over 30 climate experts including climate analytics, research, methodology and innovation development. Viola is working on topics at the intersection of finance and climate change and is supporting public and private sector clients with developing solutions to address climate impacts and risks. She is co-author of several studies for governments and investors on climate change risks of and financial actors’ impact on climate change. She also leads the implementation of ISS’ Second Party Opinion business for Green, Social and Sustainability Bonds and accompanying methodology development. Viola was named in the Forbes 30 Under 30: European Finance list in 2020.

Julia Leske, Head of ESG Australia and New Zealand, ISS ESG

Having worked in ESG since 2007, Julia has a great understanding of company sustainability assessments and reporting frameworks. She has been involved in the collation and construction of sustainability indices and has contributed to a range of thematic reports on corporate ESG challenges. Through working with a broad range of investors to incorporate ESG criteria into their investment processes, and participation in multi‐stakeholder groups and investor collaborations, Julia also has extensive experience in stakeholder engagement.
