In the last few years, a growing number of investor stewardship codes have called for investors to become more active owners. Stewardship codes typically outline how investors can encourage companies to incorporate and maintain good corporate governance and integrate sustainability into their business practices. These factors are often described as non-financial risks; however, they have been observed to have a significant bearing on shareholder value. Engagement and proxy voting are two crucial components of investment stewardship, and this paper provides investors with some guidance and tools to help navigate this aspect of the responsible investment journey in Australia and beyond.
